My Sigma EX 50-150mm f/2.8 APO focuses perfectly on my 20D but needed AF Micro adjustment on my 50D, sharp as a pin now.Īlso my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM had focusing issues on my 50D but is great on my 20D. Rob,for some reason Sigma lenses can have focusing issues with Canon DSLRs. Flashes, studio strobes & various access. Only you can decide if the f1.4 is worth a couple hundred dollars more.Īlan Myers "Walk softly and carry a big lens."ĥDII, 7DII(x2), 7D(x2) & other cameras. But, for $100 US, the f1.8 lens is a real bargain.

The f1.4 lens also enjoys distinctly high build quality. Of course, if and when they ever do, the new version will undoubtedly cost more!Ĭomparing images from both, I do think the Canon f1.4 lens give superior image quality to their bargain "nifty fifty" f1.8 lens: nicer bokeh, more resistance to flare, generally more saturated colors.
Sigma box vs nck box update#
I was really hoping that the Sigma lens, along with the even more recently introduced Nikkor 50/1.4, would finally wake up Canon to get off their collective buts and update their lens. Oh, and the Siggy's hood is the much cooler looking "petal" type. I'd sure use it to protect that big, beautiful chunk of glass up front! The hood is a separate accessory, highly recommended but at additional cost with the Canon. It's nice the Siggy comes with a lens hood. Heck, even the Canon 50/1.2L only uses 72mm filters! The modern Canon EF 50/1.4 uses 58mm, like a lot of other prime Canon lenses. For comparison, the old Canon FD "New" and Nikkor 50/1.4 AIS from the film days both used 52mm filters, as does the EF 50/1.8. I have same size to fit other lenses already in my kit, altho 77mm seems ridiculous for a 50mm lens. For me, the issue wasn't odd size filters, as it is with some third party lenses (including some others from Sigma). But when I looked at images from both lenses (all the comparisons I could find), I just didnt' see enough difference in image quality to justify it. I seriously considered "upgrading" to the more expensive, larger and heavier Sigma. It appears to me that the Siggy might have a slightly smoother bokeh at it's biggest apertures, too. I think the Sigma is slightly sharper wide open, but might be just a little softer at mid-apertures. f2 really makes a big difference, and by f2.8 it's as sharp as can be. The Canon benefits from being stopped down a wee bit. I've been lucky not to have any AF problems, perhaps because I've always had and used the matched lens hood (when reversed for storage it supposedly protects the AF mechanism while the lens is in your camera bag). If you want to focus manually, turn off AF.

However, some folks have attributed AF failures to this (dunno if they are correct).
Sigma box vs nck box manual#
It's supposed to allow Full Time Manual focusing (FTM), or override of the AF system without having to physically turn off the AF. The EF 50/1.4 is one of the last lenses still using a non-ring type USM focusing systems. You have to be careful not to knock it about, or the AF mechanism can get damaged. The Canon is an old, old design and a wee bit fragile. It's a beast of a lens, really huge for a 50/1.4.

Either one might need calibration, although the Sigma seems more likely to need it, just judging from the posts and comments. Overall, I think they are both quite good lenses. So have I got it wrong what the consensus view here would be, are the magazines favouring Canon because it's Canon, or is it that such reviews don't rate the "X factor". I'm intrigued though that I've now come across at least 3 magazine reviews of the various canon compatible 50's and each one has consistently rated the Canon 50 higher than the Sigma (and this is without them taking account of any focus issues this lens may suffer). Still the images it provides wide open have a pleasing look it's hard to put in words.Īfter much reading around this forum I get the impression that most here would rate the Sigma 50 as better than the Canon 50 1.4.some even stretching it to compare favourably with the 50L, at least for the price. I've got the Sigma 50 1.4, third copy actually and even after calibration still has it's focus issues.AF micro-adjust needs to be +7 for close subjects to around -7 for distant.
